Tubetamil

The old Tubetamil was a video site with a whole menu for laughter: Comedy, Tamil Comedy, Funny Videos. This guide turns that menu into a comedy tube for Tamil cinema. Its 172 Tamil comedies and comedy series are shelved by the comedian who makes them funny: Nagesh and Vadivelu, Vivek and Santhanam, Soori, Yogi Babu, RJ Balaji, Sathish, Redin Kingsley and Karunakaran. Comedies led by the heroes themselves sit on two shelves of their own, and twenty-two comedy series on another. Each title has a synopsis, cast and a Watch now button that finds where to watch it legally.

Tubetamil: the Tamil comedy tube, shelved by comedian

From Funny Videos to a comedy tube

The old Tubetamil, as the Wayback Machine kept it, was a video site with a crowded menu: Cinema, Comedy, Tamil Comedy, Funny Videos, Eelam Artists, Entertainment and Tamil News. Three of those seven entries were about laughter. Visitors came for film scenes, comedy tracks and short clips, and the comedy tracks were known by the comedian who carried them: a Vadivelu track, a Vivek track, a Santhanam track. In Tamil cinema the comedian often has a comedy track of his own inside the film, a thread of scenes that runs beside the main story.

This guide keeps that habit and turns it into a shelf system. Tubetamil gathers 172 Tamil titles that TMDB, the community film database, tags as comedy: 150 films and 22 series. The films sit on shelves named after the comedian in the cast. Ten comedians each have a shelf: Vadivelu, Nagesh, Vivek, Santhanam, Soori, Yogi Babu, RJ Balaji, Sathish, Redin Kingsley and Karunakaran. Films led by the heroes themselves, with the ten absent from the cast, sit on two shelves of hero comedies, one up to 2012 and one from 2013. The twenty-two series share a shelf called Comedy series. The board on the home page, Thirteen shelves of laughter, shows all thirteen at a glance.

Each poster carries the name of its shelf and its year, so a row tells you at once whose comedy you are about to watch. Every title page has an English synopsis, the cast and a Watch now button that opens JustWatch for your country, where the legal services for that title are listed.

How the shelves are filled

Tubetamil starts from Tamil-language titles on TMDB with an English synopsis, a poster and the Comedy tag among their genres. Films need at least ten votes on TMDB and series at least two; two older series with several seasons, Ammuchi and Ramany Vs Ramany, were added by hand. Two adult sex comedies were left out by hand, so the tube suits a family evening.

The titles are then taken in order of votes, most voted first. Each film goes to the first of the ten comedians, in the fixed order above, who appears among its first fifteen cast names. A film with both Vadivelu and Nagesh in the cast, such as Kadhala Kadhala or Imsai Arasan 23rd Pulikecei, goes to Vadivelu, because his name comes first in the order. A film with Nagesh and Vivek, such as Minnale, goes to Nagesh. Each comedian shelf holds up to fourteen films. The other films go to the hero comedies, split at the end of 2012, up to eighteen films each. Series go to the series shelf.

The rule is simple and strict, and it has one clear effect: a comedian who works often next to an earlier name in the order ends up on fewer shelves than his career suggests. Karunakaran appears in nineteen titles of the catalogue but has eleven films on his own shelf; Redin Kingsley appears in thirteen and has eight. The other appearances sit on the shelves of Vadivelu, Santhanam or Yogi Babu, or on the series shelf.

Tubetamil in figures

The 172 titles span 1981 to 2026 and hold 5,367 votes on TMDB, with an average rating of 6.17. The 150 films hold 5,303 of those votes and average 6.11; the 22 series hold 64 and average 6.57. Forty-one films have a rating of 7.0 or more, and fifteen reach 7.5 or more.

The films run 150 minutes at the median and 149.8 minutes on average. The shortest is Orange Mittai of 2015, at 102 minutes; the longest is Saroja of 2008, at 190 minutes. By decade, two films come from the 1980s, six from the 1990s, twenty-seven from the 2000s, eighty-four from the 2010s and thirty-one from the 2020s. The 2010s are the heart of the tube: every film on the Santhanam shelf comes from 2008 to 2015, every Sathish film from 2010 to 2018 and every RJ Balaji film from 2014 to 2020.

Comedy is the only genre that every title shares, and in seventy of the 150 films it is the first genre TMDB lists. Next to it come drama in 77 titles, romance in 59 and action in 53. Thriller appears in 21 titles, family in 17 and horror in 12, which is enough for a small horror-comedy tour of its own.

The ten comedian shelves

Ten comedian shelves hold 114 films between them, with an average rating of 5.91 and 3,605 votes. The order of the shelves follows the fixed order of the rule, which roughly runs from the great names of the 1990s and 2000s to the new names of the 2020s, with Nagesh, the oldest of them, placed second. On the board, the comedian shelves carry the group label Tamil Comedy, after the old menu entry.

The shelves differ a lot in size and in rating. Vivek, Santhanam, Soori and Yogi Babu fill all fourteen places; Nagesh has seven films, Redin Kingsley eight and Sathish nine. The Nagesh shelf has the best average rating of the ten, 7.07, and the Karunakaran shelf comes second with 6.52. The Soori shelf has the lowest average, 5.46, close to the Santhanam shelf at 5.49. The Yogi Babu shelf holds the most votes, 731, thanks to Jailer and Beast.

Vadivelu: the king of the comedy track

Vadivelu has twelve films on Tubetamil, from Muthu in 1995 to Naai Sekar Returns in 2022, with an average rating of 5.99 and 451 votes. His films run 159 minutes on average, the longest of the comedian shelves, and eight of the twelve run two and a half hours or more.

The most voted is Chandramukhi of 2005, directed by P. Vasu, where creepy happenings in an old mansion are blamed on the ghost of a courtesan; it holds 79 votes and a rating of 6.9. Then come Pokkiri of 2007 with 71 votes and Naai Sekar Returns of 2022 with 56. Naai Sekar Returns is the shelf's true Vadivelu film: he plays the lead, a man who decides to make money by kidnapping dogs, and its rating of 7.1 is the second best of the shelf.

The best rated is Imsai Arasan 23rd Pulikecei of 2006, by Chimbu Deven, with 7.6 from ten votes. Set in the late eighteenth century, in the early days of the British Raj, it tells the story of twin brothers separated at birth: Pulikesi, the foolish elder king, and Ukraputhan, the wise younger brother, both played by Vadivelu. Chandramukhi, Kadhala Kadhala of 1998 and Friends of 2001 all hold 6.9.

The shelf is also a tour of Vijay films: Friends, Vaseegara, Pokkiri, Villu and Sura, from 2001 to 2010, all sit here. Their ratings spread wide, from 6.9 for Friends down to 2.6 for Sura, the lowest rated film on the whole of Tubetamil. For a first Vadivelu evening, Imsai Arasan 23rd Pulikecei and Naai Sekar Returns show him in the lead; Chandramukhi and Muthu show him beside Rajinikanth.

Nagesh: the classic shelf

Nagesh has seven films, from Thillu Mullu in 1981 to Vasool Raja MBBS in 2004. They come from the later part of his career, beside Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth and the younger stars. The shelf holds 219 votes and has the best average rating of all the comedian shelves, 7.07, with five films at 7.0 or more.

Five of the seven films star Kamal Haasan: Michael Madana Kama Rajan, Apoorva Sagodharargal, Avvai Shanmugi, Panchatanthiram and Vasool Raja MBBS. Four of them were directed by Singeetham Srinivasa Rao or K. S. Ravikumar, two each. The best rated are Apoorva Sagodharargal of 1989, at 7.6, about an honest police officer who pays a heavy price and the son who seeks revenge years later, while his twin is taken for the culprit; and Michael Madana Kama Rajan of 1990, at 7.2, where a wicked man separates quadruplets at birth. Panchatanthiram of 2002 and Michael Madana Kama Rajan tie as the most voted, with 37 votes each.

Thillu Mullu, directed by K. Balachander, is the oldest film on Tubetamil. Rajinikanth plays a young man who lies to his boss about his mother's health and then has to invent an idle twin brother to save his job; it holds a rating of 7.0. Minnale of 2001, directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon, also sits here, because Nagesh comes before Vivek in the order.

Vivek: the comedian with a message

Vivek has fourteen films on Tubetamil, from Boys, Dhool and Thirumalai in 2003 to Aranmanai 3 in 2021. The shelf holds 494 votes and an average rating of 5.81, with one film at 7.0 or more. The shelf shows the range of heroes he stood beside, from Vijay and Vikram to Dhanush and Karthi.

The most voted is Velaiyilla Pattathari of 2014, directed by R. Velraj, with 82 votes and a rating of 7.5, the best of the shelf. Dhanush plays Raghuvaran, unemployed for years, who finally gets his dream job and a powerful rival with it. Its sequel, Velaiyilla Pattathari 2 of 2017, directed by Soundarya Rajinikanth, sits on the same shelf with 51 votes and 5.6; here Raghuvaran faces the owner of a construction company, played by Kajol.

Singam 2 of 2013, by Hari, is the second most voted with 66 votes: Suriya returns as Duraisingam, working undercover as an NCC officer at a school in Thoothukudi. Boys of 2003, directed by Shankar, follows six young men through their teenage years and holds 6.7, the same as Meesaya Murukku of 2017, the story of a young man who dreams of a music career.

Dhanush leads four films of the shelf: the two Velaiyilla Pattathari films, Mappillai and Uthama Puthiran. Vijay leads two, Kuruvi and Thirumalai, and Suriya two, Singam 2 and Perazhagan. Perazhagan of 2004 gives Suriya two roles: a hunchbacked phone booth operator who loves a blind street dancer, and a constable who looks just like him. For a Vivek evening, Velaiyilla Pattathari and Perazhagan make a good pair.

Santhanam: the friend of the hero

Santhanam has fourteen films, all from 2008 to 2015, with 465 votes and an average rating of 5.49. The shelf reads like a list of the heroes of those years: Arya, Karthi, Jiiva, Udhayanidhi Stalin, Siddharth, Vishal Krishna and Ravi Mohan, with Rajinikanth and Ajith Kumar on top.

The most voted is Lingaa of 2014, by K. S. Ravikumar, with 71 votes: Rajinikanth plays both a small-time thief and the grandfather whose dam he learns about. Raja Rani of 2013, directed by Atlee, follows with 68 votes and the best rating of the shelf, 7.2, shared with Santosh Subramaniam of 2008. Raja Rani is about John and Regina, who dislike each other and are pushed into marriage; Santosh Subramaniam is about a young man whose father decides everything for him, a Tamil remake of the Telugu Bommarillu.

The shelf has a director of its own. All five films of M. Rajesh on Tubetamil are Santhanam films: Siva Manasula Sakthi of 2009, Boss Engira Baskaran of 2010, Oru Kal Oru Kannadi of 2012, All in All Azhagu Raja of 2013 and Vasuvum Saravananum Onna Padichavanga of 2015. Siva Manasula Sakthi, with Jiiva, is the best rated of the five at 6.6, about two young people who lie about their jobs when they meet; Boss Engira Baskaran, with Arya and Nayanthara, is the most voted, with 38 votes and 6.4. Sundar C adds three more: Theeya Velai Seiyyanum Kumaru, Aranmanai and Aambala.

Ratings on this shelf spread wide. All in All Azhagu Raja and Alex Pandian, both of 2013, sit at 3.7, the lowest of the shelf. For a first Santhanam evening, Boss Engira Baskaran and Siva Manasula Sakthi show the friendship comedy at its liveliest, and Raja Rani shows him in a bigger romantic drama.

Soori: the village comedies

Soori has fourteen films, from 2013 to 2022, with 302 votes and an average rating of 5.46, the lowest of the comedian shelves. The shelf is close to a portrait of one partnership: Sivakarthikeyan leads seven of the fourteen films, from Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga and Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam in 2013 to Don and Prince in 2022.

The most voted is Don of 2022, directed by Cibi Chakaravarthi, with 41 votes and a rating of 6.0: a young man still looking for his passion clashes with a strict teacher at his engineering college. RajiniMurugan of 2015, by Ponram, follows with 28 votes; Rajini Murugan fights a man who wants a share of his family's land. Kanchana 3, Pasanga 2 and Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam hold 26 votes each.

Two directors shape the shelf. All four films of Pandiraj on Tubetamil sit here: Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga, Pasanga 2, Kadaikutty Singam and Namma Veettu Pillai. So do all three films of Ponram: Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam, RajiniMurugan and Seemaraja. Several of their stories are set among villagers and large families. Kadaikutty Singam of 2018, with Karthi as a farmer who tries to keep a big family together, holds 6.6.

The best rated films of the shelf are Pasanga 2 of 2015, at 7.1, about the parents of two very lively children and the doctor and teacher who help them; and Idharkuthane Aasaipattai Balakumara of 2013, at 7.0, a comedy with Vijay Sethupathi as an idle young man whose life gets tangled with a tormented bank employee. Naiyaandi of 2013, with Dhanush, sits at 3.3, the second lowest rating of any film on Tubetamil, after Sura.

Yogi Babu: the comedian of the 2020s

Yogi Babu has fourteen films, from Komban in 2015 to Tourist Family in 2025, and the shelf holds 731 votes, the most of any comedian shelf. Its average rating, 6.23, is the third best of the ten, and three films reach 7.0 or more. Yogi Babu appears in sixteen titles of the whole catalogue, as many as Santhanam, and only Karunakaran appears in more; the two outside his shelf are Aranmanai 3, on the Vivek shelf, and the series Chutney Sambar.

The two most voted films of the shelf are the second and third most voted titles on Tubetamil, after Super Deluxe: Jailer of 2023, with Rajinikanth as a retired jailer pulled back into a dark world, at 137 votes and 6.6; and Beast of 2022, with Vijay as a former RAW officer among the hostages in a mall, at 95 votes and 5.1. Both were directed by Nelson, and so were Doctor of 2021 and Kolamavu Kokila of 2018. All four films of Nelson on Tubetamil are Yogi Babu films. Kolamavu Kokila, with Nayanthara as a young woman who takes up drug peddling to pay for her mother's treatment, holds 6.6.

The shelf also has the films where Yogi Babu stands at the centre. Mandela of 2021, directed by Madonne Ashwin, stars him as a poor village hairdresser who becomes the game changer in a local election; it holds 7.3. Madonne Ashwin also made Maaveeran of 2023, with Sivakarthikeyan as a timid newspaper cartoonist who starts to hear a voice in his head, at 7.1.

The best rated of the shelf is Tourist Family of 2025, directed by Abishan Jeevinth, at 7.8 from 54 votes: a Sri Lankan family seeking a fresh start in India turns a disconnected neighbourhood into a warm community. It is the third best rated film on all of Tubetamil. Love Today of 2022, by Pradeep Ranganathan, about a couple who swap phones for a day, holds 6.9; his first film, Comali of 2019, about a man who wakes from a sixteen-year coma, sits on the same shelf at 6.0.

RJ Balaji: from the radio to the lead

RJ Balaji has eleven films, from Vadacurry and Naaigal Jaakirathai in 2014 to Mookuthi Amman in 2020, with 230 votes and an average rating of 5.68. His shelf has the shortest films of the ten comedian shelves, 127 minutes on average, and every one of the eleven runs under two and a half hours.

The most voted is Naanum Rowdydhaan of 2015, directed by Vignesh Shivan, with 55 votes and a rating of 6.3: Vijay Sethupathi plays the son of a police officer who dreams of being a rowdy, and Nayanthara a young woman with impaired hearing who wants him to take on the man who killed her parents. Devi(L) of 2016, by A. L. Vijay, follows with 34 votes; a man who wanted a modern wife marries a village girl, who is then possessed by the ghost of an aspiring actress. Its sequel, Devi 2 of 2019, sits on the same shelf.

Two films show RJ Balaji in front. LKG of 2019, directed by K. R. Prabhu, stars him as a small-time politician who wants to lead the state; it holds 6.5. Mookuthi Amman of 2020, which he directed with NJ Saravanan, has him as a TV reporter who gets help from the goddess Mookuthi Amman, played by Nayanthara, to expose a self-styled godman. The best rated film of the shelf is Jil Jung Juk of 2016, at 6.7, about three bumbling men tasked with smuggling cocaine.

Sathish: the spoof and the sidekick

Sathish has nine films, from Tamizh Padam in 2010 to Tamizh Padam 2, Kalakalappu 2 and Ghajinikanth in 2018, with 181 votes and an average rating of 5.73. The shelf holds Tamizh Padam, directed by C. S. Amudhan, a mockumentary that parodies the stock scenes of commercial Tamil films, at 5.9. Its sequel Tamizh Padam 2, also by C. S. Amudhan, holds 6.1; its story follows a stringent cop who hunts a dreaded don.

The most voted film is Thangamagan of 2015, by R. Velraj, with 39 votes; Dhanush plays a young man who tries to clear his father's name. Ethir Neechal of 2013, with Sivakarthikeyan as a man whose odd name makes him the butt of every joke, holds 6.3 from 30 votes.

The best rated is Tamizhuku En Ondrai Azhuthavum of 2015, directed by Ramprakash Rayappa, at 7.7 from eleven votes: a solar flare cuts the mobile networks of the city, and several lives that depend on one phone call cross each other. It is one of the fifteen titles of the Rated 7.5 or more list. That list draws on six comedian shelves, Karunakaran with three films and Nagesh, Vadivelu, Vivek, Yogi Babu and Sathish with one each; the other seven come from the hero comedies.

Redin Kingsley: the newest shelf

Redin Kingsley has eight films, all from 2022 to 2025, the youngest shelf on Tubetamil. They hold 165 votes and an average rating of 5.64. Redin Kingsley appears in thirteen titles of the catalogue in all, but five of them, Jailer, Beast, Doctor, Kolamavu Kokila and Naai Sekar Returns, sit on the shelves of Yogi Babu and Vadivelu, who come before him in the order.

Two films on the shelf come from Adhik Ravichandran: Mark Antony of 2023, the most voted with 36 votes, where a mechanic finds a phone that connects to the past and tries to save his mother; and Good Bad Ugly of 2025, with Ajith Kumar as a gangster who surrenders for the sake of his wife and son, with 35 votes. Gatta Kusthi of 2022 follows with 34: a man who wants a timid, subservient wife marries a wrestler.

Bloody Beggar of 2024 puts Redin Kingsley high in the cast beside Kavin Raj, as the life of a beggar is turned upside down by a strange adventure, and it is the best rated film of the shelf. Soppana Sundari of 2023, with Aishwarya Rajesh as a young woman who wins a car in a lucky draw, and Perusu of 2025, about two brothers who find their late father in a strange state on the day of his funeral, both hold 5.7.

Karunakaran: the new Tamil cinema

Karunakaran has eleven films, from Pizza in 2012 to Vaa Vaathiyaar in 2026, with 367 votes and an average rating of 6.52, the second best of the comedian shelves. Six of the eleven reach 7.0 or more, more than on any other comedian shelf. It is the shelf of Karthik Subbaraj, Nalan Kumarasamy and Balaji Tharaneetharan, whose first films, Pizza, Soodhu Kavvum and Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom, came out in 2012 and 2013.

The most voted is Pizza of 2012, Karthik Subbaraj's first film, with 90 votes and 7.0: a pizza delivery boy walks into a bungalow where strange events begin. Then come Jigarthanda of 2014, also by Karthik Subbaraj, with 77 votes and 7.6, about a young director who studies a merciless gangster for his film; and Soodhu Kavvum of 2013, by Nalan Kumarasamy, with 70 votes and 7.1, about a small-time kidnapper with his own set of rules and three young men who join him.

The best rated are Lakshmi of 2018, at 7.8 from ten votes, about a schoolgirl who sets out to join a national dance competition; and Indru Netru Naalai of 2015, at 7.7, where two friends find a time machine. Seethakathi of 2018, with Vijay Sethupathi as a veteran stage actor, holds 7.3. Vijay Sethupathi leads five films of the shelf: Pizza, Soodhu Kavvum, Orange Mittai, Seethakathi and Tughlaq Durbar.

Karunakaran appears in nineteen titles of the catalogue, the most of any of the ten comedians. Eight of them sit on other shelves: Lingaa and Vasuvum Saravananum Onna Padichavanga with Santhanam, Kavalai Vendam with RJ Balaji, Ghajinikanth with Sathish, Soppana Sundari and Perusu with Redin Kingsley, and the series Paper Rocket and Time Enna Boss!?.

The two hero-comedy shelves

When the first fifteen cast names leave out all ten comedians, the laughter comes from the hero, the heroine or the whole gang of friends. These films sit on two shelves of hero comedies, with the group label Cinema on the board, after the first entry of the old menu. Each shelf holds eighteen films. Together they are the best rated part of Tubetamil: the shelf up to 2012 averages 6.91 and the shelf from 2013 averages 6.59, both above every comedian shelf except Nagesh.

Hero comedies to 2012

The first shelf runs from Arunachalam of 1997 to Nanban and Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom of 2012, with 718 votes and an average rating of 6.91. Eleven of its eighteen films reach 7.0 or more. Its films are also the longest on Tubetamil, 162 minutes on average, with Saroja of 2008 at 190 minutes, 7G Rainbow Colony of 2004 at 185 and Nanban at 181.

The most voted is Anbe Sivam of 2003, directed by Sundar C, with 94 votes and 7.7: two very different men, the young and arrogant Anbarasu and the scarred, warm Nallasivam, played by R. Madhavan and Kamal Haasan, are thrown together by circumstances and find that fate binds them. It is tied with Mozhi of 2007 as the best rated film of the shelf. Mozhi, directed by Radha Mohan, follows a musician who falls for a stubborn young woman with impaired hearing and speech, played by Jyothika.

Next come Ayan of 2009 with 84 votes, Ghilli of 2004 with 78 and Nanban of 2012 with 74. Kamal Haasan leads three films of the shelf: Anbe Sivam, Thenali of 2000 and Pammal K. Sambandam of 2002. Venkat Prabhu has three: Chennai 600028 of 2007, about a gang of young cricket players in Chennai, at 7.2; Saroja of 2008; and Goa of 2010.

The shelf also holds two films of new directors. Aaranya Kaandam of 2011, by Thiagarajan Kumararaja, follows two rival mafia gangs over a single day, after two innocent people steal a bag of cocaine; it holds 7.5. Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom of 2012, by Balaji Tharaneetharan, is about a young man who forgets the last year of his life in an accident two days before his wedding, and the friends who make sure the wedding happens; it holds 7.4. New of 2004, directed by and starring S. J. Suryah, about an eight-year-old boy who becomes a man of twenty-eight while staying a child inside, holds 7.6.

Hero comedies from 2013

The second shelf runs from Vaayai Moodi Pesavum of 2014 to Vishwanath & Sons and With Love of 2026. It holds 980 votes, the most of any shelf on Tubetamil, and averages 6.59, with eight films at 7.0 or more.

The most voted title of the whole tube sits here: Super Deluxe of 2019, by Thiagarajan Kumararaja, with 148 votes and 7.7. Its stories cross on one fateful day: an unfaithful newly-wed wife, an estranged parent, a priest and an angry son. Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal of 2020, with Dulquer Salmaan and Ritu Varma as two online scammers, follows with 88 votes, and Thiruchitrambalam of 2022, with Dhanush and Nithya Menen, with 78 and 7.4.

The best rated film on all of Tubetamil is also on this shelf: Oh My Kadavule of 2020, directed by Ashwath Marimuthu, at 7.9 from 52 votes. Arjun, played by Ashok Selvan, is married to his best friend Anu, the marriage turns into a nightmare, and he gets a second chance in life. Ashwath Marimuthu also made Dragon of 2025, with Pradeep Ranganathan as a school topper who turns into a college bad boy and then cons his way into a finance career, at 7.3. Pradeep Ranganathan leads two films here, Dragon and Dude of 2025, after Love Today and Comali on the Yogi Babu shelf.

Jigarthanda DoubleX of 2023, the follow-up of Karthik Subbaraj to his Jigarthanda, holds 7.7. Kadhalum Kadanthu Pogum of 2016, by Nalan Kumarasamy, with Vijay Sethupathi as a small-time rowdy fresh out of prison who becomes the neighbour of a young woman new to Chennai, holds 7.3, and Pa Paandi of 2017, directed by Dhanush, holds 7.0 with Rajkiran as a retired stunt master. With Love of 2026, directed by Madhan, stars Abishan Jeevinth, the director of Tourist Family, in the lead role.

The comedy series

The thirteenth shelf holds twenty-two Tamil comedy series, from Ramany Vs Ramany of 1998 to Brothers and Sisters, LBW: Love Beyond Wicket and Resort of 2026. On the board it carries the group label Funny Videos, the old menu entry for short clips.

Twenty of the twenty-two series have a single season, seventeen of them with thirteen episodes or fewer, and the most common counts are eight episodes, for five series, and seven, for four. Three long serials of 2026 change the total: LBW: Love Beyond Wicket with 120 episodes, Resort with 100 and Brothers and Sisters with 84. Two series have several seasons: Ramany Vs Ramany, a sitcom of 1998 directed by Naga of Marmadesam, with three seasons and fourteen episodes; and Ammuchi of 2019, about Ammuchi, who solves the problems Arun creates whenever he visits Kodangipalayam, with two seasons and seventeen episodes. In all, the twenty-two series hold 466 episodes.

The votes are few, 64 in all, so the ratings move a lot with each vote. The most voted is Modern Love Chennai of 2023, created by Thiagarajan Kumararaja, with eleven votes and 6.1: six love stories of the city, funny, quirky and deep. Chutney Sambar of 2024, created by Radha Mohan, stars Yogi Babu as an orphaned street vendor who becomes part of his rich stepbrother's family; it holds 8.4 from four votes. Triples of 2020, about three friends who go to Goa to save their business, holds 7.2 from four.

Some series bring film directors to the small screen. As I'm Suffering From Kadhal comes from Balaji Mohan, who made Kadhalil Sodhappuvadhu Yeppadi, Vaayai Moodi Pesavum and Maari 2. Victim of 2022 is an anthology of four stories, with Chimbu Deven, M. Rajesh, Pa. Ranjith and Venkat Prabhu among its creators. MY3 of 2023 comes from M. Rajesh, the director of five Santhanam comedies. Time Enna Boss!? of 2020, about an IT worker who has to host four time travellers in his new house, and Akash Vaani of 2022, about a divorced couple who pretend to be happily married at a college reunion, round out the shelf.

The comedians on every shelf

The rule places each film by one of ten names, but many other comic actors appear across the shelves. The most frequent of all is Manobala, who appears among the first fifteen cast names of thirty titles, from Perazhagan in 2004 to Naai Sekar Returns in 2022. His thirty films spread over seven shelves: seven with Santhanam, seven with Sathish, five with Vadivelu, three each with Vivek and RJ Balaji and on the hero comedies, and two with Soori. Watching the Manobala films alone would make a tour of seven of the thirteen shelves.

Mayilsamy appears in sixteen titles, from Thenali in 2000 to Mookuthi Amman in 2020, six of them on the RJ Balaji shelf. Rajendran also appears in sixteen, all from 2010 to 2018, four each on the shelves of Yogi Babu and Soori. Delhi Ganesh appears in twelve, from Apoorva Sagodharargal in 1989 to Kanchana 3 in 2019, three of them on the Nagesh shelf, and also in the series America Mappillai.

Kovai Sarala appears in eleven titles, spread across nine shelves, from Kadhala Kadhala in 1998 to Aranmanai 3 in 2021; she is part of the three Kanchana films, two on the hero comedies and one with Soori. M. S. Bhaskar appears in ten titles, from Mozhi in 2007 to Tourist Family in 2025. Munishkanth appears in nine, Premji Amaran and Robo Shankar in eight each.

A good way to use the tube is to follow one of these names across the shelves. Search for Manobala or Kovai Sarala, and the results bring together comedies of many years and many heroes.

The horror comedies

Twelve titles on Tubetamil carry both the comedy and horror tags, all films, from Chandramukhi in 2005 to Aranmanai 3 in 2021. Their average rating on TMDB, 5.19, is lower than that of any shelf, but they hold 447 votes and include three film series.

Raghava Lawrence directed and starred in all three Kanchana films: Kanchana of 2011, where three spirits possess a timid young man; Kanchana 2 of 2015, where a TV crew stages a horror show in a bungalow that turns out to be truly haunted; and Kanchana 3 of 2019. Sundar C made Aranmanai of 2014, about a family that wants to sell its ancestral palace, and Aranmanai 3 of 2021. A. L. Vijay made Devi(L) of 2016 and Devi 2 of 2019, both with Prabhu Deva and Tamannaah Bhatia.

The best rated horror comedies are Pizza of 2012, at 7.0, on the Karunakaran shelf, and Chandramukhi of 2005, at 6.9, on the Vadivelu shelf; they are also the two most voted, with 90 and 79 votes. Devi(L) follows at 6.0. Masss Engira Masilamani of 2015, by Venkat Prabhu, has Suriya as a conman who gains the power to see ghosts and decides to make money from it. Hello Naan Pei Pesuren of 2016 is the smallest of the group: a thief steals a phone where the ghost of its owner now lives.

The directors of laughter

Sundar C directed seven films on Tubetamil, the most of any director: Arunachalam and Anbe Sivam on the hero comedies, Theeya Velai Seiyyanum Kumaru, Aranmanai and Aambala with Santhanam, Aranmanai 3 with Vivek and Kalakalappu 2 with Sathish. M. Rajesh also has seven titles, five films with Santhanam and two series, Victim and MY3.

K. S. Ravikumar has six films: Muthu and Aadhavan with Vadivelu, Avvai Shanmugi and Panchatanthiram with Nagesh, Thenali on the hero comedies and Lingaa with Santhanam. Venkat Prabhu has five titles, four films and the series Victim. Nelson, Pandiraj and Balaji Mohan have four each, and two of them stay on a single shelf: all of Nelson's films are with Yogi Babu and all of Pandiraj's with Soori.

Some directors follow a comedian, and some follow a hero. The Santhanam shelf belongs to M. Rajesh; the Soori shelf to Pandiraj and Ponram; the Yogi Babu shelf to Nelson. Others move between shelves: Karthik Subbaraj and Nalan Kumarasamy between the Karunakaran shelf and the hero comedies, Thiagarajan Kumararaja between the hero comedies and the series.

The heroes beside the comedians

Counting the first two cast names of each film, the most frequent lead on Tubetamil is Vijay Sethupathi, with twelve films from Pizza and Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom in 2012 to Tughlaq Durbar in 2021. His films average 6.64 and hold 548 votes, the most of any lead; the best rated is Super Deluxe. Five of them sit on the Karunakaran shelf, one on the hero comedies to 2012, two on the hero comedies from 2013, and one each with RJ Balaji, Sathish, Soori and Yogi Babu.

Sivakarthikeyan leads eleven films, from 2013 to 2023, with an average of 5.69; seven of them are on the Soori shelf and the best rated is Maaveeran, at 7.1. Vijay, Kamal Haasan, Dhanush and Nayanthara lead ten films each. Kamal Haasan has by far the best average of the leads, 7.07, from Apoorva Sagodharargal in 1989 to Uttama Villain in 2015, with Anbe Sivam as his best rated film. Vijay's ten films average 5.63, with Ghilli and Nanban at the top, both at 7.1. Dhanush's average 5.89, with Velaiyilla Pattathari at the top, and Nayanthara's 5.67, with Raja Rani at the top.

Suriya leads eight films, from Friends in 2001 to Vishwanath & Sons in 2026, with an average of 6.14. Karthi leads seven, with the lowest average of the main leads, 4.95. Rajinikanth leads six, from Thillu Mullu in 1981 to Jailer in 2023, with an average of 6.60; Arunachalam of 1997 is his best rated on the tube, at 7.3.

The pairing of a hero and a comedian is the heart of the shelf system. Choose a hero first, then let the shelf label tell you who brings the laughter: Sivakarthikeyan with Soori, Arya with Santhanam, Vijay Sethupathi with Karunakaran, Kamal Haasan with Nagesh.

Sequels and returns

Several film families sit on Tubetamil, and on TMDB the second part usually rates below the first. Velaiyilla Pattathari holds 7.5 and its sequel 5.6. Kanchana holds 5.6, Kanchana 2 holds 5.1 and Kanchana 3 holds 4.1. Aranmanai holds 5.2 and Aranmanai 3 holds 3.8. Devi(L) holds 6.0 and Devi 2 holds 4.2.

Two families go the other way. Tamizh Padam 2 of 2018 holds 6.1, above the 5.9 of Tamizh Padam of 2010. Jigarthanda DoubleX of 2023 holds 7.7, a step above the 7.6 of Jigarthanda of 2014, and it sits on the hero comedies while the first film sits with Karunakaran.

Four more sequels are on Tubetamil alone, with their first parts outside the catalogue: Singam 2 with Vivek, Pasanga 2 with Soori, Kalakalappu 2 with Sathish and Maari 2 on the hero comedies from 2013. Each of them can be enjoyed on its own, and the title pages give the synopsis to follow the story.

Reading ratings and votes

Each card shows the TMDB rating, and each title page shows the votes behind it. On Tubetamil, the films hold 30 votes at the median; twenty-nine films have fifty votes or more and forty-six have fewer than twenty. A rating from ten votes moves much more with each new vote than a rating from a hundred, so for a safe choice look for a high rating with many votes: Super Deluxe, Anbe Sivam, Jigarthanda, Velaiyilla Pattathari and Thiruchitrambalam all combine a rating of 7.4 or more with more than seventy votes.

The series hold very few votes, eleven at most, so their ratings are best read as a first impression. Ammuchi at 10.0 and Ramany Vs Ramany at 9.0 each rest on a single vote, Akash Vaani at 9.5 and Brothers and Sisters at 9.0 on two; America Mappillai at 1.0 also rests on two.

Comedy across the decades

The two films of the 1980s, Thillu Mullu and Apoorva Sagodharargal, average 7.31. The six films of the 1990s average 6.91 and the twenty-seven of the 2000s 6.64. The eighty-four films of the 2010s, the biggest decade on the tube, average 5.83, and the thirty-one of the 2020s climb back to 6.18.

A week of laughter

One way into Tubetamil is a week with a different comedian every evening. On Monday, Michael Madana Kama Rajan for Nagesh and the quadruplets of Kamal Haasan. On Tuesday, Imsai Arasan 23rd Pulikecei for Vadivelu as two brothers. On Wednesday, Velaiyilla Pattathari for Vivek beside Dhanush. On Thursday, Boss Engira Baskaran for Santhanam with Arya. On Friday, Mandela for Yogi Babu in the lead. On Saturday, Soodhu Kavvum for Karunakaran and the kidnapping comedy. On Sunday, Oh My Kadavule, the best rated hero comedy, for the whole family.

For a second week, take the newer names: Don for Soori, LKG for RJ Balaji, Tamizh Padam for Sathish, Bloody Beggar for Redin Kingsley, then Super Deluxe, Thiruchitrambalam and an evening of the series Chutney Sambar.

Choosing for the company

With children in the room, Pasanga 2, about two lively kids and the parents who learn to accept them, and Lakshmi, about a schoolgirl who loves to dance, are gentle choices; both sit on comedian shelves and both rate above 7.0. Tourist Family suits every age as well. With friends, the gang comedies work best: Chennai 600028 and its street cricket, Goa, Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga or Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam.

For a couple, Raja Rani, Oh My Kadavule, Kadhalum Kadanthu Pogum and Love Today are all love stories with a comic edge. For those who like a darker laugh, Soodhu Kavvum, Aaranya Kaandam, Jigarthanda and Super Deluxe mix comedy with crime. For a scare with a smile, Pizza and Chandramukhi are the best rated horror comedies. And for a long evening with grandparents, the Kamal Haasan films of the Nagesh shelf, such as Avvai Shanmugi and Michael Madana Kama Rajan, bring the classic comedy of the 1990s.

How to read the board

The board on the home page shows the thirteen shelves as framed boxes, in the style of the old video listing. Each box carries its group label, Tamil Comedy, Cinema or Funny Videos, then the shelf name and the number of titles. Press a box to open the shelf. Under the board, every shelf follows as a row of framed posters; each poster carries the comedian or shelf name and the year, and the Watch now button on each title page leads to the legal services.

Watch now on Tubetamil

Each title page has a Watch now button. It opens the title on JustWatch for the country you choose, where you see the services that stream, rent or sell it legally. Availability changes from country to country and month to month, so the button always shows the current list.
